Three Myths Keeping You Illiterate ❌ Myth 1: Each character is a random picture to memorize False. About 90 percent are phono-semantic compounds 形聲字 : one part hints at MEANING, one part hints at SOUND. Example you already say: 媽 mā — 女 (woman, meaning) + 馬 mǎ (sound) = mom. Not random. Once you see the pattern you can guess new characters. ❌ Myth 2: I need to write beautifully to read False. Taiwanese adults type far more than they handwrite. Recognition is not recall. You need to RECOGNIZE about 1000 to read a newspaper, but only WRITE about 100 by hand to fill a form.
